Chemostratigraphy, Chronostratigraphy and Provenance Evaluation within the Grand Banks (2017)
Chemostratigraphy, Chronostratigraphy and Provenance Evaluation within the Grand Banks (2017)
A chemostratigraphic evaluation of 48 wells, from base Tertiary to TD on Cretaceous and Jurassic strata, selected from across the basins of the Grand Banks area, chronostratigraphic control is provided by stable isotope stratigraphy, and selected sandstone samples have been analysed by heavy mineral and detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology.
Application: Provides an independent, regional correlation framework for the Cretaceous and Jurassic successions. The chemostratigraphic correlation is integrated with published lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic datasets providing an integrated stratigraphic framework across the margin. Carbon-13 provides chronostratigraphic control through stable isotope stratigraphy, with comparison to the global C-13 isotope curve. An XRD calibrated normative mineralogy calculation provides mineralogical logs for each study well, and published TOC data has been used to calculate a TOC estimation for each study well. Automated Raman heavy mineral analysis and detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology provides new provenance data on key sections.
Basins: Carson Basin, Jeanne d’Arc Basin, Flemish Pass Basin, Orphan Basin, and the Outer Ridge Complex (ORC)
Stratigraphic Range: Base Tertiary through to TD; Cretaceous and Jurassic focus.
Techniques: Chemostratigraphy, Carbon-13 stable isotope stratigraphy, Heavy mineral analysis, Detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology, XRD and Normative mineralogy.
